There are many ways for leadership effectiveness to fall down, but one of the biggest ways is lack of clarity and lack of accountability.

Many leaders are promoted into roles with a general assumption that they just know what to do. And often those leaders are afraid to speak up if they are unclear as they also feel they should just know.

However most don’t, they learn through mistakes and this can be costly financially and culturally and also effect mental wellbeing. However businesses have a responsibility to set our leaders up for success so they can learn with less mistakes and be given the tools to succeed.

There are two very effective ways to do this.

The first is a foundational management course, that focuses on practical basics, not theory based leadership concepts. This equips managers with the basics to get the most out of their teams and have a planned, proactive approach to thrive.

The second is once equipped with the basics and tools to succeed, assess leadership performance on a regular 360 basis (360 means self, manager, peer and subordinates are invited to provide feedback to provide a more balanced view) and coach for deficiencies and reward where performance meets or exceeds benchmarks. This provides clarity over Key Result Areas, allows individual development based on real time needs, rewards the right performance and behaviours and provides a link to culture and retention.

Employees don’t usually leave jobs, they leave managers. So some warning signs you may see if leadership performance is lacking include staff retention issues, cultural problems and performance and productivity issues.

If you could use some help implementing an effective, measurable and practical program for your managers and/ or setting key result areas and measuring on a 360 basis, contact us today for an obligation free discussion.
